Dawn to Dusk: A Life of Peace
The theme for this year's Islamic Awareness Program is Dawn to Dusk: A Life of Peace. The objective was to illustrate how Muslims go about their daily activities just like everyone else, but with the spiritual aspect rooted as well. We hope that the non-Muslims will gain a better insight of the lives of Muslims, clearing up misconceptions about Islam being a rigid religion.
The program consisted of an exhibition showcasing what a typical Muslim does throughout the day, talks by reknown speakers such as Dr. Syed Farid Al-Atas, a movie screening of "Kingdom of Heaven" with commentary, as well as a Friday prayer observance for the non-Muslims at An-Nahdhah mosque. Alhamdulillah, we've received a warm response for the programs, and it seems that the audiences enjoyed and gained from this program. May all of us be inspired to continue pursuing efforts of Da'wah, and seeking knowledge. InsyaAllah.
FOC '07 - Bloods & Roses
Alhamdulilllah...FOC went on pretty smoothly, and the participants seem to manage to enjoy themselves throughout the camp, and gained insight about their new alma mater! For those who'd like to know what Bloods & Roses was about, visit their blog!
Inspirez: To Dare is to Do
For this year's semester break, NTUMS has organised a trip to Dukun, Central Java, to offer their voluntary services to the local school children there. Part of their project includes an education program, learning each other's cultures, and even making room extreme make-overs! Team members also spent considerable time doing self-reflection, and strengthened the bonds amongst them...InsyaAllah, we hope that the lessons learned throughout their trip and the special bond they've formed lasts for a long long time to come...
Movie Challenge '07
As part of fund raising effort, NTUMS organised a movie marathon cum Qiyamulail just for students. We understand that the due to the upcoming exams, most of us would feel the stress, so why not de-stress in a meaningful way? The movies shown are aimed towards portraying positive values, reflected upon after Subuh prayers, under the guidance of Ustaz Saif-Ur-Rahman.The An-Nahdhah mosque personnel were generous enough to allow us to use the mosque's premises for or event. The girls and guys were separated by a divider in the theaterette, but they were allowed to just sit back relax (with some cushions provided) on the floor. After 3 films. (yep, it took the whole night), the participants took a nap before waking up for Qiyamulail, led by Ustaz saif-Ur-Rahman. Alhamdulillah, the event went on smoothly, and we are pleased to have such great support by members both from NTUMS and from other institutions! Do take time to read the article written by Sis Anah, from NUS, about her thoughts on the event.
Islamic History- The Four Righteous Caliphs
NTUMS conducted an online survey on the feasibility of having a weekly class on one of a variety of interesting Islamic topics in NTU. Alhamdulillah, the responses have been good. With reference to the results of the survey, we have decided to proceed with the effort, and a weekly class spanning over 5 weeks was organised, in collaboration with Ustaz Saif-Ur-Rahman.
Background of the Ustadz Saif-ur-rahman: Ust Saif-ur-rahman was a lawyer in private practice for several years before he was eventually appointed as Head Imam of Masjid Khalid. He commands a thriving, varied congregation especially amongst converts who have benefited immensely from his interactive and comprehensive style and charisma. He teaches fardhu 'ain, fiqh, sirah, tawhid & tasawwuf amongst others with emphasis on Islamic values and spiritual development. Ust Saif-ur Rahman is guided by renowned teachers such as Shaykh Zakaria Bagharib & Shaykh Mohd Ibrahim. He currently serves in the Syariah Court of Singapore as Court Manager and actively contributes to programs by visiting scholars to the region.
Alhamdulillah, the classes went on smoothly, with about 30 students attending the class each week. Basically, we were taught the important events that happened in the course of the caliphate of Saiyidina Abu Bakar (r.a.), Saiyidina Umar Al-Khattab (r.a.), Saiyidina Uthman Bin Affan (r.a.) and Saiyidina Ali (r.a.), as well as their contributions during their caliphate, and the legacies they left.
Musollah Painting Day
Musollah Painting Day was an event held to refurbish the four existing musollahs (in NTU) for the Musilimin and Muslimah. Initially, we had planned to paint the Musollah's using the colours that have been voted for in the yahoogroup polls. However, the Office of Planning and Management of NTU offered to repaint the Musollahs with a standardized colour and vinyl flooring for all rooms, and the works proceeded in March. Besides a fresh coat of paint, and new flooring, some covering of the pipes have also been done. As for the North Girls musollah, new carpet tiles have been placed as well. New noticeboards will soon be hung, and that shall complete the fresh look of the musollahs!
**Please be reminded that no personal belongings should be left in the musollahs. This is to ensure that the musollahs are tidy at all times, so that it is condusive for solat. We would really appreciate your cooperation. Thank you.
**Secondly, we are also seeking for kind sponsors of new sejadahs, as many existing ones are old and tattered. Do contact Sister Filzah @ 91773295/filzah@ntums.org to make your contributions. Thank you.
